Partnerships 2024
Rob Thompson is a Participation Officer for Kildare GAA. Rob is our year-round on site GAA coach who supports the development of ball handling skills in conjunction with the class teacher. From fun warm up games to mastering the more difficult techniques, Rob encourages and guides the children from Junior Infants to 6th class so they can transfer their developing skills into their school and club teams.
John Holmes has been coming to Rathmore N.S. for over 15 years now to spread his love of hurling amongst our younger students. John takes 2 classes each Tuesday and the students absolutely love their sessions with John. The teachers benefit greatly from John’s expertise in this area of hurling.
CYCLING IRELAND
- Cycling Ireland’s initiative to teach 6th class students cycling safety and the rules of the road is a fantastic programme. Cycling is not just a means of transport or exercise, but also an essential life skill, especially for our students who are used to cycling on quieter country roads but will someday cycle in busier urban areas like Naas town and its surroundings. Teaching students about road signs, right of way, proper hand signals, and how to interact with other road users (such as motorists and pedestrians) is critical to preventing accidents. Knowing the rules builds their confidence and makes them more responsible cyclists. As a Green School and an Active School, we hope that by encouraging cycling we can promote a healthy, active lifestyle while also reducing our carbon footprints!
By offering a team of swimming teachers to cater to children of varying abilities, Rathmore NS are ensuring that every child can participate in the Aquatics strand of the curriculum. This inclusive approach fosters not only the physical development of students but also confidence in those who may not have had access to swimming lessons outside of school. Students who attend swimming lessons outside of school can further refine their skills, allowing for personal progress at all levels.
Partnerships 2020-2023
Gaelic Games – We have partnered with different sports coaches and outside agencies over the last two and a half years. We are very lucky to have Rob from Kildare GAA come in and coach the children from Junior Infants to 6th class this year. We also have a hurling coach, John Holmes from Naas GAA who most often introduces the children to hurling for the first time. John teaches the children from junior infants to 6th class basic hurling skills. Mr Bolton is also our School Liaison Officer with our local club Eadestown GAA. He links in with the GAA club to help children to discover more about Gaelic Games.
Leinster Branch Rugby Club – We are delighted to have Mick Cahill from Leinster rugby, come in and teach the children the fundamental skills of tag rugby
GAA 5-Star – we are partnered with the GAA to become a GAA 5-Star Centre. The GAA 5 Star initiative aims to support and recognise Primary Schools that provide pupils with 60 minutes of moderate to vigorous Gaelic Games activity per week in a manner that ensures the children will experience fun, friendship, fairness and ultimately improve their fitness.
Golf – In February 2020 Dermot Griffen, the captain of Naas golf club came into our school and worked with 4th class for a few weeks and showed them basic gold skills.
Swimming – The children from junior infants to 6th class attend swimming lessons at Kilashee in Naas for 6 sessios every academic year. However, since March 2020 all swimming has been suspended due to Covid-19.
